The Vembanad Lake is the largest backwater stretch which flows through three districts and drains into the Arabian Sea. The lake with eight arms-Ashtamudi Lake is the second largest backwater here and is considered as the gateway to the Kerala backwaters. There are lots of houseboats available on these backwaters which take the tourists for a ride on them and also offer the facility to live on them for few days. The tourist can sit back and relax on these houseboats and enjoy the beautiful journey on the backwaters with swinging palm trees all around. This the best way to explore Kerala.

But the most interesting element of the backwaters in Kerala is Kuttanad region also known as the rice bowl of Kerala. The interesting thing about this place is that it is the only place in Asia where farming is done below sea level. This is done by using dykes and bunds.
